Robotics & Physical AI

The same AI wave that rebuilt software is now moving into the physical world. Two engines drive it: humanoids - general-purpose robots aimed at a multi-trillion-dollar labor market, with falling bill-of-materials costs and the first real production lines - and the continued automation of factories and warehouses. As with the AI trade, the durable edge is in the picks-and-shovels: the precision actuators and reducers, the machine vision that gives robots eyes, and the compute platforms (NVIDIA Isaac/GR00T/Jetson) that give them brains - the suppliers who get paid per robot regardless of which humanoid brand wins.

The demand engine

~$38B
Humanoid robot TAM by 2035 (Goldman; ~1.4M units). MS: ~$5T / ~1B units by 2050
18k → ~1M/yr
Humanoid units, 2025 to 2030-35; ~88% CAGR (BofA Institute)
4.66M
Industrial robots operating worldwide (+9% YoY); 542k installed in 2024 (IFR)
~$20B
Servo/actuator market by 2030; machine vision ~$20-42B by 2030

By the numbers, 2026-2035

Humanoids - the new category

  • Humanoid TAM: ~$38B by 2035 (Goldman, ~1.4M units); ~$5T / ~1B units by 2050 (Morgan Stanley); ~$7T / ~648M by 2050 (Citi). Goldman Sachs; Morgan Stanley; Citi, 2024-25
  • Adoption curve: ~18,000 units (2025) to ~1M/yr (2030-35) to ~10M/yr (2035+), ~88% CAGR; bill-of-materials $35k (2025) to $13-17k (2030-35). BofA Institute, Apr 2025

Who is actually building them (company targets - aspirational)

  • Tesla Optimus: ~50-100k units targeted in 2026, ~1M/yr Fremont run-rate end-2026, 10M/yr capacity from 2027 (company guidance). Tesla, 2025-26
  • Figure AI raised >$1B at a ~$39B valuation (Sept 2025); Unitree shipped >5,500 humanoids in 2025 (~$250M revenue), filing to IPO. Company / press, 2025-26

Industrial & collaborative automation

  • 542,000 industrial robots installed in 2024; 4.66M operational worldwide (+9%), China ~54% of installs. IFR World Robotics 2025
  • Industrial-robot market ~$46-85B by 2030 (~10-14% CAGR); cobots scaling ~30%+ CAGR (scope-dependent). Cross-firm estimates, 2025

Precision components - the contested value

  • The "joint" is the prize: Harmonic Drive ~85% of strain-wave reducers; Nabtesco ~60% of RV reducers, doubling capacity by 2026 for humanoid demand. Company / industry, 2025-26
  • Strain-wave market ~$5-8B by 2030; servo motors/actuators ~$13.5B (2024) to ~$18-20B (2030). Research and Markets; Grand View

Eyes & brains

  • Machine vision ~$14-20B (2025) to ~$20-42B (2030), CAGR ~7-13%. Grand View / M&M / Mordor
  • NVIDIA frames robotics/physical AI as a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity; Isaac GR00T foundation model + Jetson Thor (2,070 FP4 TFLOPS) are the reference brain. NVIDIA, GTC 2025

Earnings-growth potential (analyst estimates & company guidance)

Estimates / guidance, not actuals - fast-moving; verify before acting. Humanoid revenue is largely pre-commercial.
